Today we went to the state fair. I was excited to create a post about our day filled with compelling & amusing pictures, but Blogger (or my computer?) is refusing to upload them. So, free your minds and let those imaginations fill in the blanks.
The weather was perfect, clear blue skies & not too hot. We visited the "miracle of birth" barn and saw a poor sheep about to give birth surrounded by a crowd of people & a guy practically on top of her with a camera so it could be broadcast on screens all over the barn. :( I know it's educational & everything but I found it disturbing. In my mind I'm secretly plotting an escape plan for the remaining pregnant animals in that barn.
So, jumping off my soapbox, we saw a dog agility demo. (cute!), a birds of prey demo. (very cool), must-have gagets galore & our favorite talent competition. I enjoyed my once-a-year corn dog & we all engaged in our annual "weird new fair food experiment". This year it was chocolate covered bacon. Yep, what could be weirder that that? Jer & Jenna liked it. Kendall thought it was gross & didn't get past the first bite. I didn't really like it either, but managed to finish my piece just to make sure. The chocolate bacon was sold at a Famous Daves vendor that featured the loudest Elvis impersonator I've ever heard.
As usual, we marveled at the people who had most likely spent $50 in the midway attempting to win an amazing prize, that were now stuck hauling around 5-foot tall gorilla on their backs all day. We again lamented the loss of Paul Majors as we passed the KARE11 booth (ok, that was just me), and I had to settle for getting my picture taken with the Randy Shaver cutout (sorry Randy - there's no comparison).
So yeah, the fair is pretty much the same year after year, but maybe that's why we love it. Getting Sweet Martha's Cookies to eat at the talent show has become a family tradition we cherish. :) So, everyone go to the fair - and if anyone gets the hot dish on a stick, PLEASE come back here & tell me about it. I can't even imagine.....

Hey! We were at the fair yesterday too!!! And we were at the Miracle of Birth farm watching a laboring goat and I was thinking the EXACT same thing as you with all the people around. However, I must say - it sounds like you have a MUCH better time than I did. For some reason, I think the fair would be more fun with kids that are your kids ages than it is with my kids the ages they are. Oy! I really need to go to the fair without kids sometime so I can actually see what I want to see.
And quite honestly - who comes home from the fair starving? Me. Really. I only had corn at the fair. There's something just sick and wrong about that.
I may need to go back by myself. ALthough I think I spent all my money there yesterday. :)
Would have been fun to run into each other. Or not - you may have seen a frustrated-tired-looking-crabby Tami side you've never encountered before. HA!
ah, the fair.
I can tell you are getting in every last morsel of summer fun you can before school begins. Did Jer go with you?
I'm hoping next week will be fun of many last minute summer adventures, but with a teething, cranky baby, who knows.
Glad you had fun, and the Paul Major's thing...really, he sent you a autographed picture, what more could you ask? He had to move on in life.
i would have to say that the sweet martha's cookies was the best thing all day...
i just wrote a big long comment and then blogger glitched on me and i lost it. now i'm mad and i'm going to bed. maybe i'll try again tomorrow. sorry deb!
arg. My grammatical pet peeve is there for all to see. It is really bugging me. My post should read, "really, he sent you AN autographed..."
Re: the hot dish on a stick...
Since no one else has obliged you with a description yet...I was at the fair with a friend who tried it. Imagine:
Meatball - tater tot - meatball - tater tot - dipped in batter, deep fried, and served with a side of mushroom soup gravy...Tastes just like it would in a casserole (which depends on your experience with hot dish of course)!
I think we walked the same track - saw the Elvis guy too, only he was in line getting some choco-bacon for himself and another friend we were with actually knew him, though we didn't stop to talk.
