The Soccer Mom is often the victim of ridicule and sarcasm. The very term conjures up images of a high-heeled, yuppie, manicured woman poised on the sidelines with a designer laptop carrier at her side. Tonight I'd like to set the record straight.
This evening I endured possibly the most miserable soccer game of my 6 year "soccer mom" career. Although there was a severe thunderstorm warning for our county, the league rule is that the game is played unless there is lightning or tornado sirens blaring. So, we loaded the van with umbrellas & blankets and off we trekked to Kendall's game. It was windy, it was pouring, and the temperature was rapidly dropping. The manicured, yuppie mom would be tempted to sit in the car...but not the true soccer mom. After 1/2 hour of sitting in the rain with my comrades - a blessed flash of lightning! Now, this doesn't mean that the game is cancelled. It means that we trudge back to our cars to wait for 30 minutes and see if the game can resume. But...there is hope.
However, our dream of dryness was not fulfilled tonight. Although the rain intensified, the lightning stopped..and the game went on. The soccer moms sat there with our umbrellas blown inside-out more than not, laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. We were drenched & frozen, but our little baby girls were drenched & frozen more. And they lost the game. We talked about how we would stop & buy the girls hot chocolate on the way home.
So despite the reputation, I am happy to be part of this group called soccer moms, and I know the same can be said for hockey, football, & softball moms everywhere! I think there might be a sports-ball shaped crown jewel waiting for us in Heaven. :)
Better luck next time Cyclones!

hot chocolate?
strange spring your having there.
No doubt, our game would have been called with weather like that. Today I was talking to a fireman (at Audrey's soccer game) and he said yesterday was busy because there was a tornado watch and so they all had to be on guard. Tornado watches!?! There are what, 4 a week in minnesota. I asked if they have tornadoes much and he said that there was on 10 years ago and anything can happen.
wimps, I tell you. I hope I don't get wimpy myself.
Ha! "there was one 10 years ago and anything can happen". That made me laugh. It's been a lousy spring so all we can do is take a little pride in our weather resiliance.
Fight the wimpiness..I'm sure it will be tempting.
i don't remember the last time we've had a tornado watch instead of a tornado warning!
Apparently the whole south half of the state could go up in a tornado today and strangely enough, I'm not batting much of an eyelash to it. Although I feel bad for Ari - the last day of school is supposed to be sunny and warm and filled with running through the backyards screaming after you get off the bus.
Deb - I LOVE your soccer mom description. Ari played soccer last summer but it's - let's just say - not her forte. But I hope to be some sort of ________ mom. At this rate - it may be a Swimming Mom but I'll take it.
I am SO bad. I responded to your comment on my page. Long story short - SO busy lately. Check out my comment on my blog for the story. I promise to get something new posted this weekend. I gotta get back on the "blog wagon." :)
